Standard I Reflection:

Although I have written a number of research papers, this standard, and in particular the web log for evaluating web sites, allowed me the opportunity to hone my critical analysis skills when determining the appropriateness of research information. In addition, it provided an organized format to use in the evaluation of various aspects of web sites, including their authority, accuracy, coverage, and if information is relevent and recent.

In the classroom, this standard will be invaluable in teaching students the skills they will need in the critical assessment of web sites. To introduce students to critical assessments, the web log could be used in conjunction with a Track of various web sites that students would be required to evaluate. The use of a Power Point presentation as the final product for a research assignment is a great way to introduce students to the various elements necessary for effective research in solving a problem or answer a questions, from developing a thesis statement to documenting sources. A Power Point presentation would also appeal to younger students, because it would allow them the opportunity to include pictures and/or graphics with their end product. The Power Point presention could also be used to allow the student an opportunity to present their research to the class, thus allowing students the opportunity to practice and enhance verbal communication skills in addition to their writing skills.
